“Death Panels” Alive and Well in the UK – Is US Next?

The UK has a government healthcare system much like the one Obama wants to implement here in the States. It’s run by the National Health Service and is funded mostly by taxes. Different “care pathways” are used to manage each patient’s health depending on the severity of illness. If the patient’s condition is beyond treatable and death is imminent, the patient is put on the “Liverpool Care Pathway for the dying patient” (LCP). The LCP functions much like hospice care here in the US. Its function is to keep patients as comfortable and pain-free as possible in their last hours of life.

Nourishment is provided by tube, strong sedatives such as morphine are administered, and since treatment for their illness is halted, patients usually die within about 33 hours of being placed on the LCP. Nearly 30% of people who die in the hospital every year in the UK are people on the LCP. That’s about 130,000 people. Some are deeply concerned that doctors are taking advantage of this particular care pathway by using it as a tool to euthanize thousands of elderly patients per year.

According to Professor Pullicino, an English neurologist, many patients’ conditions are not properly analyzed prior to being placed on the LCP and are placed there simply to free up beds or to get rid of difficult-to-deal-with elderly patients. Many of these patients could have lived much longer if it weren’t for being put on the LCP prematurely.

A few years ago, some notable doctors and professors in the UK warned that these very scenarios could happen, and that the LCP would be used as a “death pathway” instead of a care pathway. It looks like their warnings were justified because these things are happening now in the UK. Of course, the health department denies that the Liverpool Care Pathway has anything to do with euthanasia or using economic factors in determining who gets placed on the LCP, but why would we trust them?

Former Governor Sarah Palin caused quite a stir in the media a few years ago when she talked about a “death panel” as it related to a section in the ObamaCare legislation that allowed Medicare to pay for patient consultations regarding “end-of-life” issues. A “faceless bureaucracy,” as she called it, would be responsible for deciding who gets to receive care and who doesn’t based on subjective criteria as well as a cost-benefit analysis. Critics on the left called the whole idea of a “death panel” a government conspiracy theory, saying these people were deranged and fear-driven.

And how dare these people even consider the idea that our government would seek to euthanize its weakest citizens in order to “keep costs down.” The legislation itself doesn’t have any mention of “death panels” specifically. It doesn’t mention a bureaucracy either that will decide who will die and who will live. The bill, however, is filled with legalese, so the language is so vague that even the worst possible interpretation would technically be permissible. The media so overreacted that in 2009, “death panel” was PolitiFact’s “Lie of the Year,” FactCheck’s “whopper” and the American Dialect Society’s “most outrageous term.” If there was absolutely no truth in Governor Palin’s statements, then why was the provision in question removed from the legislation after the uproar? Sometimes, when the media overreacts, mocks and ridicules to that extent, it means they were trying to cover something up.

Consider these things:

Our government can watch millions of unborn babies being slaughtered without batting an eye, which tells us something about our government’s view of human life. From their perspective, human life itself is not important. There is no “sanctity” of human life. People are just numbers, and right now, we’re “overpopulated.” So, when those numbers get too high, certain measures must be taken in order to make those numbers go down. In fact, Planned Parenthood’s goal from the beginning was to depopulate the black race, which is why their centers were strategically placed near minority neighborhoods. Talk about racism. You definitely won’t hear that on the news. But what you will hear are politicians bemoaning the rise in “teen pregnancies.”

And notice they don’t care one bit about immorality. It’s the numbers they’re worried about. It’s the fact that more people are being born than they want. So they actually encourage immorality . . . as long as those involved use contraceptive devices or at least terminate the unwanted pregnancies in case they have an “accident.” Given that this is the state of mind our government has today, is it really that much of a stretch to think that they would want to decide who receives government healthcare and who doesn’t depending on a cost-benefit analysis? Having the government run the entire healthcare system will require that they keep costs down as much as possible. The more costs go up, the more they have to levy taxes on those paying for their “free healthcare.” Rationing of care will be necessary in order to keep costs down, and since beds and doctors will be limited, some patients will just have to be “let go” while others receive care.

Like the doctors who warned about the potential abuse of the Liverpool Care Pathway, Sarah Palin and others warned us about the death panel here at home under ObamaCare. Are death panels headed in our direction? Perhaps they’re already here.

Is this idiot becoming a hegemonist by seeking to overtake Canada and Mexico and incorporate them into his totalitarian system just like Hitler did to Austria and Czechoslovakia in the middle to late 1930's. At present, we don't see this as a possibility, but if this bozo wins in November, God forbid because then Canada and Mexico better be prepared! However, I don't see this happening because I hope and pray this bozo doesn't win in November!! In fact, it would seem to me that the best thing would be to impeach this anti-American socialist NOW before its too late!! That would also get rid of guys like Geitner, Holder, Sebelious, Clinton and a number of others!! Let's pray this indeed happens! If not now, then for sure it must happen in November!!

Colonoscopies for people over 55 I doubt it, you're too close to your expiration date. Angioplasties for people over 55 I doubt it, you're too close to your expiration date. Etc., etc., etc. I'm sure if you ask for a test to make sure about something that your Doctor will have to look down a chart that corresponds to your age. If there is an Obummer Face in the square you can have that test or procedure, but if there is a skull and crossbones you can't.

Some of this reasoning is understood, some of it makes no sense or fails to elaborate:

Planned Parenthood - set up near "African-American" neighborhoods - aren't those the folks on the Presidents side, mindlessly voting for socialism based on race - and PP is depopulating them. And then when Republicans are said to be "racist" for opposing these murdering killers of the unborn children - explain to me how it is? and so we kill off the African race and supplant it with willing Mexicans - sounds so reasonable to me.

as for the death panels for us the older generation - we who remember the way it is supposed to be and we are a drag on the medical insurance companies, a sure fire way to reduce the socialist governments enemy number one - those that have read and understand the Constitution, the concept of Freedom and Liberty - and depleting those that actually believe in Christianity. I think God knew what he was saying, three score and ten - then let's just euthanize everyone on their 71st birthday - because from then on - they are just being alive - not contributing - the government can then just take their assets and redistribute them to those that want them. Give me the pill at bed time and don't wake me in the morning. Such a sorry world we have made for ourselves: A Nanny state with a big brother at your shoulder.

under this chimp dick-tater what do think hell yes

Guess Palin was right about the death panels. Wow, big shock, right. It's probably only one of many parts of the 2,500 healthcare mess they shoved down our throats.

  • democratsarefools

I like the article. Our Govt sanctions the killing of babies. They use our tax dollars to pay for it.

  • marineh2ominer

It is already here in the United States , I have talked to several nurses that came home upset because the medical authorities refused to run tests on elderly people because they were no longer " productive " citizens . This is not a fairy tale , it is a FACT .

    • Nadine

Yes...I work in the medical field also. Unless this is repealed we are all targets. Beleive me, the doctors are not happy & neither are the patients!

Why are we surprised at this because at one united Nations General Assembly meeting Hillary Clinton said the main concern of the Obama administration was population control. Another time, she spoke out in favor of gun control.

  • Nadine

This just makes my stomach turn...we as Americans can NOT let this happen!! Vote Obummer out so we can start healing our country! It's goona take time, but it can be done! Oh, we also have to start working on the people in OHIO..this is not about who is LIKED, this is about who can do the JOB & retore our country! Romney can do that!

Where is AARP, the other taco joint, when the lives of elderly people are threatened without any legal revue or guarantee?

  • gerald

What I find to be really amazing is that when the old folks are sick and need to go to a convelescent center for recovery or whatever they are nearly forced to sign their homes over to medicare medicaid or whatever. Furthermore as for the canadian healthcare system my mother lives in Canada and has for the last 35 years, she's 77 years old and has no complaints about the healthcare she's provided which is of course more often these days. And it's provided to her free. Obamacare will absolutely not be free.

It's called IPAB (Independent Payment Advisory Board) and it does exist. This Board will decide how much to pay doctors for procedures. It's rationing in its most basic form. It consists of 15 "experts" (who are not doctors) appointed by the President. Although they claim that IPAB won't be making decisions, only "recommendations", it requires a two-thirds vote of congress to overrule those recommendations. We already have many doctors saying that they will quit practicing medicine when Obamacare is fully in place. When that occurs, we will have the shortage of doctors that is bound to occur in any socialized plan, and the game of musical medical chairs starts. Every time a doctor leaves one more person is "out" of the game. Oops! No medical procedure for you!

I am an expatriate, living in Austria, and they also have Death Panels here. My brother in law was a victim of one. 65 years old, freshly retired wine farmer, never sick in his life, found out in November 2008 that he had liver cancer, but it had no spread and the doctors said a transplant would save him. The beaurocrats in charge decided he was too old to waste the money on, so they sent him home to die. He died two months later. ObambiCare will also have Death Panels. Obama supports the murder of our unborn and he will love the murder of our elderly. The man is one sick puppy and should be in prison for the good of society! Remove this Constitution Hating Fake American on November 6! My vote goes to the good Mormon, not the deceitful Moron!

  • ladyceo

Death panels need not only apply to the elderly. Will Obamacare pay for care for a premature baby or a child with any other disability??? I think that's another direction in which we are headed with Obamacare/tax. ABO in 2012!

  • TxGCB

Elders were to be respected and cherished until this new age. Their wisdom was what transcended the ages. Now, sad but true, the elderly are expendable to affect the bottom line.

  • David Lakatos

The Government does not care about killing babies why would you think that the government would care about killing old people?

  • nanblan

What the Canadians are doing - and what Obama's planning for us - is exactly what the
Nazis did under Hitler. Basically, they killed everyone (at least of the Jewish race,) who was not in a "productive" time of life. This, of course, included babies and young children as well as the elderly and/or sick. You see, these people were of no use to them because they couldn't perform the slavish work they demanded. Their decisions about who would be discarded were guided by supposed routine 'health" checks. The prisoners had to line up, fully naked, to see "doctors" who would then decide if they were strong enough to keep alive. The people were then either sent back to the concentration camps or to the gas chambers.
It's really sad that we now have a government that basically thinks the same as the Nazis,
only the program they set up will, obviously, be more subtle. They'll find sneaky ways to circumvent the law to kill off those of us who they consider as useless.
Sure sounds like death panels to me.

there appear to be so many intelligent and aware folks on this site lamenting their fate should the resident of the white house is reelected.  Make sure you voice your opinion at the ballot box by voting out this antiAmerican pseudopresident and many of our concerns will be nullied.
