The Bible or the Bayonet

In a parable about stewardship in Luke 19, Jesus tells His hearers to “occupy until I come.” The New American Standard translates the verse this way: “Do business until I come.” The verse prior to the parable gives the context: “While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they [His listeners] supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately” (Luke 19:11). Since this parable immediately follows the story of Zaccheus’ conversion, we have no reason to assume that Jesus is speaking to a different audience. In this parable, Jesus actually speaks of three groups of people: (1) faithful and productive stewards, (2) unfaithful and unproductive stewards, and (3) His enemies. The rewards doled out to the first group and the punishment given to the third seem to be fair enough to our 21st century sensibilities, but the parable is really directed at the second group—the most populated of the three—the unfaithful and unproductive stewards.

If we were really honest with ourselves, we would be quick to admit that we do in fact belong to the second group. Each of us have been given talents and abilities that are seldom used to their maximum effectiveness. Far too often, we are more than willing to stand in the shadows and allow our gifts to go unnoticed. And when this happens on an individual level with alarming regularity, we should not be too surprised when it begins to happen to the church as a whole. The Church in America has an astounding physical presence—a church can be found on nearly every corner in every town—yet the shadows loom large enough so that even these buildings can remain hidden to the culture. Rather than being the central point of contact in the community, the church has become just another building on the landscape—visible yet invisible.

As the church has become more and more invisible, the federal government has become more and more visible. This shouldn’t come as a revelation to most readers because as Robert Nisbet has pointed out:

Politics and religion are and will always be adversaries; this, be it noted, by virtue of what they have in common as much as by what separates them… Only in the mass followings of the Caesars and Napoleons of history are we able to find phenomena comparable to the mass followings of Jesus and Mohammed. But what makes them analogous also makes them adverse. When religion is powerful, as it was in the Middle Ages, the political tie is weak, raddled, and confused. But when the political tie becomes powerful, as in the modern totalitarian state, the role of religion is diminished—in large measure as the result of calculated political repression but also as the result of the sheer lure of the political-ideological “church.” [1]

Nisbet echoes another Robert–Robert Winthrop–who 150 years earlier said this:

All societies of men must be governed in some way or other. The less they may have of stringent State Government, the more they must have of individual self-government. The less they rely on public law or physical force, the more they must rely on private moral restraint. Men, in a word, must necessarily be controlled, either by a power within them, or by a power without them; either by the Word of God, or by the strong arm of man; either by the Bible, or by the bayonet. It may do for other countries and other governments to talk about the State supporting religion. Here, under our own free institutions, it is Religion which must support the State. [2]

What both Nisbet and Winthrop are saying is that when men are self-ruled under God’s law—that is, when the church is properly doing its job—the civil government is all but unnecessary. But when men are lawless and refuse to be self-governed and demand freedoms that do not rightfully belong to them—that is, when the church isn’t doing its job—they will find a tyrannical dictator for themselves who will promise to give them everything they want. It is this second state, the unhappy one, in which America in the year 2012 finds herself.

    “The Bible or the Bayonet”

The liberal socialists are pushing hard for the second option.

    • jkdriss

Hey fliteking, don’t hear from you so much anymore. Sometimes it seems like the liberals are pushing us to the breaking point. It seems like they believe they can get some of us to snap but in reality it is them that will snap and we will have to come in and clean up the mess. I mean lets face it, if Romney would have won there would have been some rioting going on, but do we behave this way? Of course not.

      • jackolantyrn356

Romney won. The count was cut way too quick by the Marxist Media. Statistically the figures are impossible and often the count was obviously an over count of number of citizen voters in most areas. Philadelphoia may be the one exception and that would be the insisted upon one recount station. (Obvious as Hell)

The Bible was lost when Obama came to office and slammed the Lincoln almost to the ground and thenm blamed the mishap on the Supreme Court. Do you not see the truth or can you be talked out of it with manufactured footage. The announcement tht Obama wanted to skip the mishap and do the swearing in later never happened. The Black Christian never got their “Swearing in Bible”…………….. I remember attending a meeting of people in which a Black Lady pprayed for the day she coukld hold the Bible a Black President took the oath on. I’m afraid she is to be etrnally disappointed.

  • jackolantyrn356

Even when the bayonet is pointed at me I will choose the Bible’s Jesus Christ who spoke of those people who can and will kill the body, but cannot kill the soul. I will run to the Arms of Jesus and die refusing to deny his name. Jesus has me in His hands and will rescue my SOUL. There is no man or Satanic figure who can harm the Christian other than take the life from the body. I will trust in Jesus Name.

    • Esther Mae Egan

Even Christ told His disciples if they did not have a weapon to sell
their coat and get one. It is further stated that a house can not be
broken into if a strong man is there. I believe the Bible speaks of a
time to war and a time when not to war, a time to fight and a time to
refrain from fighting. I believe that all men need to be persuaded with
God’s help to occupy until He comes.

      The Bible has stories
where women were used because a man was not available to put a
meaningful spike into the temples of a evil person, to hide men from her
city. Men like David who was a young man killed a giant when the grown
men were to afraid. I also believe that when the body is killed I will
be with my Lord, but on the other hand if God chooses for me to do the
unorthodox do not judge me, I will not judge you if God has not called
      you in the same way.

      • The Preacher

Hi Esther, Christ told his disciples to get a swore is because he knew that they were coming to get him, and he had to heal that ear that was cut-off. It was writtien in the old Testament, and had to be profilled that would happen. There is about 25 things that Jesus had to profill to be Jesuschrist Our Savior. It was not for war. This text is out of context to the real meaning. It proofed that Jesus had to heal that ear. Jesus does not need our help to win a war. He can call his army of Angels by the thousands, or the Angel of Death as he did in Exodus to kill the first born durning Moses period. Jesus is also called the Prince of Peace.. God bless..

So beautiful. But what do you do in the mean time, before you are killed, trying to bring people to God ? I hope you will show, invite people how to honor God. I try to show God to people in the street, in restaurants by my public prayers.

If we allow government to take the place of GOD, we have chosen the greatest evil to worship and we will suffer the consequences.

In the Black Community the act was accomplished over 4 years ago when a black voter was promised Obama, her God, was going to pay her rent and buy her a new TV…… Her vote was an easy “get” and her soul stopped being in the possibility of Heaven unless she was already a Christian. If so the rest of her Earthly life would be tormented by the Satanic Gift and her prayers would save her, but nothng else..

      • Bobseeks

When we turn away from GOD to embrace false gods, it is always amazing how pathetic and evil these false gods are. Mao-bama is a prime example of a false, pathetic, and evil god.

  • James Bradham

I am fully convince that this is the best article that I have read in a long time. He spoke that truth, this country is not Christian any more, and that is that saddest thing of all. No one believes that there is a God, nor that there is a devil, and yet both are true, we, this country, this society has given rights to groups that should have never been given, now the church is corrupt with the rest, and I haven’t seen one good pastor yet, and why, because of the sins that this society has done, and will not stop. The bible has very good examples within it, and what happened to other countries that done these things, they were found no more, just wait, ours is coming, and all will regret it, but no one believes till its to late. Don’t you understand that the Lord’s anointed ones are here already.

    • Esther Mae Egan

May I suggest you research “Free Church” on the Internet. Also find Chuck Baldwins site and look up churches, find one in your area and attend. If you can find a 501c3 church you will find a wonderful thing. There are only hundreds compared to the thousands of others.

the day after the election my wife read me a passage from 1 Samuel 8. the israelites came to samuel and say “we want a king like all the other nations”. now God had setup parameters for a king but that isn’t what they wanted. they wanted a man to rule them and God sees their heart, of course, and says to samuel “they have rejected me from being king over them”.

samuel gave them a very strong warning and told them exactly what would happen if they went this path – conscription for their sons, their property would be taken and they would be forced to work it for their king, and what property they would be allowed to have would be taxed. they still wouldnt listen so finally he told them “And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, cbut the Lord will not answer you in that day”

as i have been pondering this passage since then it seems clear the relevance to our situation. election day for most was about choosing between two men. millions flocked to the polls to vote for two men to save them. there is nothing wrong with government, clearly, the problem becomes when we replace God with government as the author points out.

if you think this all started with obama you are incredibly short-sighted, he and those who are keeping him in power are just going to bury the stinking, rotting corpse that is america. we’ve been aggressively telling God for the past several decades to butt out – of our schools, bedrooms, public square, politics and even our religion, sadly. “thanks, God, we’ve got our government so we don’t need you” has been the increasing theme as evidenced by the fact that now nearly 50% of americans get their primary financial support from the government. God has heard our request and has given us what we want and, for our own good, when we cry out to him to deliver us from the mess we created i am not sure he is going to rescue us.

your hope should not be in a man, politician, political party, new political party or political solution. your only hope is to turn to God, repent of your sin, make him Lord of your life and trust ONLY IN HIM!

“…The moral principles and precepts contained in the scriptures ought to form the basis of all our civil constitutions and laws. All the miseries and evils which men suffer from vice, crime, ambition, injustice, oppression, slavery, and war, proceed from their despising or neglecting the precepts contained in the Bible.”

Founding Father and educator Noah Webster (1758-1843)

People who follow the Law (righteous Laws for the General Welfare) usually have little to fear, (easy E.g. Driving the speed limit rarely leads to a speeding ticket) However, as our conscience is involved too…people who stray and do so knowingly and willfully to stretch, pervert, twist, and break laws, end up having to look over their shoulders…..

      “…But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;
Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and
disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of
fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
      For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my
      trust….” 1 Timothy 1:8-11

If this is the closing chapter on Man and Earththen You have to understanfd that God ends up shutting the office at that point that no one believes or will believe and those who do be;lieve are slaughtered because of their faith. Understand if this is not here on our doorstep it appears to be awfully close……. Satan is still in business and doing a good job of snaring souls. No one will get out of here alive. Every Precious thing one owns will be dross. It is time Christians think this one over carefully reading the Bible very carefully and rejecting such Bibles that have other than scripture in them. That’s all. When the headsman comes for you and me great him or her with a hug and a joyful countanance. Better y et sing a hymn. Makke it loud and Happy .

          Amen jackolantyrn356! One simple rule….1 Corinthians 4:6,

“…And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and *to* Apollos for your sakes; *that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written*, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another….”

Paul keeps it simple…..*All we have to do is Follow the Bible*; Top to bottom, front to back. Ironically, we demand that which is contained in God’s word, Peace, good will towards our fellow bretheren in the form of charity, friendship, etc….but when it comes to our temptations which are the complete opposite, as they are what Satan believes in, we don’t what to hear it. Even to the point that our conscience reminds us that what we are doing is WRONG……..we continue dow the wide and easy path. This attitude and behavior isn’t going to cut in the end…….Just as God grew tired of ignorant sacrifices, He will do the same with our “sorry’s”….because just as our children must learn, just because you SAY “sorry”……doesn’t mean there isn’t consequences for conscious negative behavior.

You’re quite correct, this has been a very long term ‘disease’, for the past many decades the secular humanist component has never rested in it’s assault on all things Christian. However, we were warned about that too, were we not? Persecution is the way of life for Christians. Time to resist / take back?

Right. But who will do something to spread God’s word ? I prayed for years, twice a month at Mary-statue downtown. Only about 7 times a different persons joined me once. Others came to touch the statue. I started yearly procession to church for Mary-crowning. And more public actions In Turnhour(Belgium) 2004, I prayed at Sacred Heart statue in center of city. Statue was in terrible shape, held together with 5 metal bands. Back in Canada, I wrote to 100+persons and the Mayor there, the statue had to be repaired. It was fully repaired in 2006. Please Catholics, wake up. Always receive H.Host on tongue, like in Latin Mass. God wants to come in you, not in your un-blessed hand.

      • Snowman8wa

You can begin here Tout…….rebuke false teachings, God’s word is perfect and those using incomplete or inaccurate modern Biblical comments can be re-proofed throughout Scripture. Seek guidance from the Lord first, as you correct inacuracy from the misguided and ignorance from the unbelievers.

“…Please Catholics, wake up….” It’s more than one denomination; I am sad to say it is across the board. Everybody claims they are the one true way; the result is narcissistic inner fighting.
The truth is that Jesus Christ shed his blood for our Salvation and in doing so HIS CHURCH was created. The Apostles spread HIS WORD. As I said to jackolantyrn356 above, Paul writes,

“…And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another.
For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?” 1 Corinthians 4:6-7
We have received God’s word, it has been solidified by Christ’s blood…..why is that so hard?

God’s grace and the Peace of our Lord be with you Tout

A mere suggestion from Yahweh is enough to prompt Christians who love their God to do what He desires. However, for those who are described as walking in the broad way, the judgments must be enforced to secure adherence to the commandments and to ensure a functioning Christian society. Paul conveyed this idea to the Roman Christians:

“…[righteous] rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: for he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he [the righteous ruler] beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath [the judgments of God] upon him that doeth evil [who willfully
transgresses one or more of Yahweh’s commandments]. Wherefore ye must needs be
subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.” (Romans 13:3-5)

Paul’s description of the God-ordained and God-obedient authorities in Romans 13:1-2 fits only a Christian government established upon Yahweh’s law. God’s law alone determines what is good and evil. Under this form of government, we have three options:

    1) Voluntary compliance to Yahweh’s law, prompted by a good conscience.
    2) Forced compliance to Yahweh’s law, prompted by fear of Yahweh’s judgments.
    3) Punishment for non-compliance, implemented by the enforcement of Yahweh’s judgments.

All governments function under these options. People recoil at the idea of a theocracy’s morality being forced upon them, but because all governments are theocracies, someone’s morality (the god of any given society) is always being enforced. This is an inevitability of government.

    Paul elaborated:

“But we know that the law [of Yahweh] is good, if a man use it lawfully; knowing this, that the law is … made for … the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind [homosexuals], for menstealers [kidnappers], for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine.” (1 Timothy 1:8-10)

The commandments and statutes alone are inadequate to prevent the crimes described in this passage. Paul was referring specifically to the judgments of Yahweh. In a society established upon Yahweh’s law, either criminally minded people will keep the commandments and statutes out of fear of “the sword,” or they will be judged for their disobedience and put under “the sword.” These judgments purge wickedness from society. Under a government administering God’s judgments, wickedness would be the exception rather than the rule.

You sound more like a Muslim then a Christian, Your living in the old Testament, and not the New We have the option to choose who want to go… Heaven, or Hell. If God wanted us to be like robots he would have made us that way TO HONOR HIM. We cannot force anyone to love God. In the New Testament God by way of Jesus made a new pact which is Mercy, Love, and forgiveness. Love thy Neighbor. By staying away from one who is evil, and showing love they will change. Funny you left out everything about love, and only remember about punishment. Who are you to Judge? Judge yourself.. Are you giving love? to your neighbor? Read christians live by the grace of God, not by the Swore. “You live by the swore, You die by the swore. keep reading the Holy bible and will fine the truth.

      • Ted R. Weiland

Preacher, you need to go back and read what I wrote. First, no one’s talking about forced conversion–something impossible to begin with.

Second, I’m promoting Yahweh’s immutable morality as codified in His perfect law and altogether righteous judgments (Psalm 19:7-11), as applicable under the New Covenant as under the Old Covenant–unless, you think Yahweh’s morality/His righteous standard changes. See Matthew 5:17-18, Romans 3:31, Romans 7:12-14, Hebrews 8:10, and 35 other New Testament passages that declare essentially the same thing.

I’d be careful about comparing His law to Sharia. You sound like the type of modern Christian described by Christ in Matthew 5:13 (salt that’s lost its savor, good for nothing but to be trampled under the foot of man) and whom Jude warned about in Jude 1:4 who turns the grace of God into licentiousness.

You might benefit from “Law and Kingdom: Their Relevance Under the New Covenant” at

Why do those who most loudly proclaim their New Covenant liberation from the law deny that the fundamental foundation of the New Covenant is that we are to finally embrace the law? Hebrews 8: 8 refers us back to Jeremiah 31, which says that He will put the law in our hearts. A question I have for all of those who call themselves, “Preacher” is: Are you a preacher or a pimp?

To LOVE is to HATE the evil & wickedness which works to destroy that love. The question you should ask, is do you LOVE fully and as perfectly that you can in HARMONY conform with ALL of Gods revealed word? Do you have a STANDARD outside of Scripture influencing your mind?

Romans 12.9 Let your love be perfectly sincere. Regard with horror what is evil; cling to what is right.

Amos 5.15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

Hebrews 8.10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people

Psalms 97.10 Ye that love יהוה (YAH,) hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.

Proverbs 11.19 As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.

Romans 13.4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
