Jackie Speier Wants You to be a Victim, Too

The phrase "liberal logic" is an oxymoron. Liberals and logical thinking simply cannot coexist, I'm convinced.

If the current push for gun control in general doesn't persuade you, consider in particular the case of Rep. Jackie Speier, another of the Brainiac brigade from California.

Speier came out yesterday for her requisite press conference supporting whatever gun tyranny the Obama Administration wants to impose on America.

Her chief assertion was that "there is, in fact, a mass killing in [the U.S.] everyday."

If you're including the slaughter of brain cells on the Left, then the statement's true. Otherwise, Speier's statement is a blatant overreach even when you take gang shootings and the like into account.

All murders are tragic, but "mass" tends to imply "a lot," "many," "more than two or three," etc. It's a typical example of a liberal projecting her own fear. I'm sure the world outside Speier's bulletproof limousine window and gate-guarded estate must seem a cold and heartless place.

But the congresswoman's thought process took a bizarre twist when she brought up being shot in Guyana in 1978.

I'm sure she still has nightmares about it, and I extend sympathy for her trauma. BUT ... that was the Jonestown Massacre in Guyana, a country in South America. It was an event in which a cult group's followers committed mass suicide -- not shootings -- at the bidding of their megalomaniacal leader. Speier and her group were unfortunate witnesses targeted by the cult's cleanup killers as they tried to flee an armed compound.

So unless Speier is suggesting that insane cult groups armed with machine guns and poisoned Kool-Aid are stalking the United States at the behest of wannabe supervillains, Jonestown might not be the best example of the alleged everyday gun slaughter liberals see going on in America.

The most ludicrous part of her thought process, however, is that by promoting  gun control, Speier and her liberal cohorts are advocating that Americans become victims just like she was.

Now I don't know what went through Speier's mind at the moment she was shot and left for dead, but I'm 100 percent certain it wasn't, "oh boy, I'm so glad I don't have a gun to defend myself with."

In fact, I don't recall ever hearing any victim of a violent crime say anything like that, and I've covered a few crime stories in my time.

But I do frequently hear about cases where homeowners or some other potential victim successfully used a gun to stop a criminal, and all of those gun-wielding Americans were pretty glad to be armed when the bad guys came calling.

California must have most of the morons in the U.S. and that includes the voters.

    • Goober

We don't have all of the morons most of the morons are in philly or ohio or any of the upper eastern states but we do have a bunch of crooked voting machines, taken care of by (you guessed it) Crooked Union's

Jackie is a victim of stupidity.

I am a retied law enforcement officer. While off duty in street clothes and appearing to be a
everyday citizen I have used my off duty weapon three different times to prevent being the victim of a crime. One attempted robbery and car jacking, (pointed my 45 auto at the car jackers who were trying to beak my car window and they ran), once having a shotgun pointed at me while I was on my motorcycle, ( same 45 pointed at the gang banger with the shotgun in the car; they almost wrecked their car escaping) and once when some idiot was trying to rip off my screen door to enter my home for some unknown reason. (that time it was a 44 mag revolver that convinced the idiot to run)

    • Goober

Typical Stupid PIG! You let them go so they could do the very same thing to somebody else! What an absolute A$$hole you are! You had a chance to take them off the street and you let them GO!!!! Maybe they will do it to your wife or children, if it happens I hope its the same guys that you let go. DumbA$$

      • reggiec

Goober; I wonder if you have ever in a similar situation. Law enforcement are trained exrensively about the use of deadly force. In the three instances I described there was a fine line that I felt that was not crossed so I did not pull the trigger. Yes they may have gone on to commit other crimes but I bet they thought twice before they did it. And the idiot that ran; I pursued him and broke his leg. He was eventually arrested when he went to the hospital to have his broken leg treated.

        • Procius

Reggiec, you didn't owe Goober any explanation for your post, his post verified his name.

Obama said "We must save every single life"...Right on...then lets start with a shake up of all the abortion clinics and all abortionists like PP....like start today...since his speech this AM we can actually determine that approx 120 baby girls and boys....our future women and men....have been taken out with an Assault Weapon...and while you are at it Mr. Obama...lets get rid of all the skin burning saline bags and those darn sucking brains out scissors more painful or as painful as those evil bullets...

OK, elite libs, let's be fair. You disarm us? Then you must give up your armored limo, armed bodyguards and security gates if you think the world is so safe to not need self defense.

  • Mudpuppy

Jackie Speier was a blithering moron when she was in the California Legislature (when I lived there). I see that hasn't changed. You are most correct, liberal and logic are total strangers. ....slaughter of brain cells on the Left.... Love that one.

Politicians like this are the reason we need to return to the exact wording of the Constitution.

I believe in GUN CONTROL for all criminals. Get the guns out of the hands of drug dealers, rapists, murderers, thieves, home invaders, Congressmen. The rest of the American people don't seem to have a problem, so leave us alone.

    • Procius

The problem with Dems is that they don't know what gun control actually is. The definition of gun control is the ability to hit what you aim at.

  • melvin polatnick

Targets in Heroin infested ghetto`s need guns to protect
themselves against druggies, muggers, and home invaders. Recipients living
under the poverty level should be supplied with a free Glock to protect their
EBT card and flat screen. Those with jobs can buy their own weapon.

    • Takincareofbusiness

The free Glock would be more useful than their free Obamaphone.

"But I do frequently hear about cases where homeowners or some other potential victim successfully used a gun to stop a criminal, and all of those gun-wielding Americans were pretty glad to be armed when the bad guys came calling."

What drivel. What about the vast majority of times a weapon is discharged in the home with no intruder? Do these instances not count since it was all within the family? What about accidental discharges? What about suicides?

1.3 MILLION Americans have been killed by guns since Dr. King and Robert Kennedy’s assassinations in 1968. This is TWICE the loss of life than all American battle casualties in ALL THE MAJOR WARS we have fought since our nation began: the Revolutionary War (4,435); the War of 1812 (2,260); the Mexican War (1,733); the Civil War (214,938); the Spanish American War (385); World War I (53,402); World War II (291,557); the Korean War (33,739); the Vietnam War (47,434); the Persian Gulf War (148); the Iraq War (3,518), and the war in Afghanistan (1,712).

Gun availability is a risk factor for homicide. Case-control studies, ecological time-series and cross-sectional studies indicate that in homes, cities, states and regions in the US, where there are more guns, both men and women are at higher risk for homicide, particularly firearm homicide. Where guns are more available, there are more homicides.

Using a validated proxy for firearm ownership, we analyzed the relationship between firearm availability and homicide across 50 states over a ten year period (1988-1997).
After controlling for poverty and urbanization, for every age group, people in states with many guns have elevated rates of homicide, particularly firearm homicide.

Survey data on rates of household gun ownership shows an association between gun availability and homicide across states, 2001-2003. States with higher levels of household gun ownership had higher rates of firearm homicide and overall homicide. This relationship held for both genders and all age groups, after accounting for rates of aggravated assault, robbery, unemployment, urbanization, alcohol consumption, and resource deprivation (e.g., poverty). There was no association between gun prevalence and non-firearm homicide.

    • Procius

Now, you don't have to explain what a Progressive republican is, you have just demonstrated it with this post. I did not know that guns were running around killing people all by themselves. I actually thought that it was people that were running around killing other people using guns, knives, clubs, golf clubs, rocks, baseball bats, candlesticks, and or anything they can get hold of at the moment. I had no idea that guns could go running around all be themselves. By the way, where do they hide their little feet when they are setting still.

    • ezekiel22

Nice story please cite websites and studies. I am curious about the statement that guns do kill people and then the follow up of when was the last time you heard of a gun pulling its own trigger. You did forge the statistics involving the use of force to protect people from crime. I am sure that was an oversight though.

    • Mudpuppy

What drivel indeed. That certainly describes your post. Guess what? Guns have been around for centuries. They aren't going anywhere. When are you liberals (and you really need to change parties, you would be more at home with the Democrats) going to realize the basic truth that if guns are banned and confiscated (a practical impossibility), that only the scum will get them and prey on the law-abiding who won't be able to defend themselves. It's been proven time and again in countries that have tried that. But you refuse to see it. The evidence is out there if you care to look for it.

      • Progressive Republican

Another drivel-monger heard from. Shocking. Feel free to point out where I said that guns should be banned and/or confiscated. You will be graded for accuracy.

Common sense gun safety regulations protect lawful ownership and use of guns.
The 1994 Assault Weapons Ban that expired in 2004 protected the rights of gun owners by exempting every shotgun and hunting rifle in use at the time. Senator Dianne Feinstein’s proposed 2013 legislation reinstating the ban specifically exempts over 900 sporting weapons. Background checks do NOT prevent legal gun purchases.

The majority of Americans, including gun owners and NRA members, support common sense gun safety regulation. 74% of NRA members and (82%) of gun owners believe that all potential gun buyers should be subject to a criminal background check. 58% of Americans favor strengthening laws covering the sale of guns.

65% of Americans and half of gun owners believe that allowing people to own assault weapons makes the country a more dangerous place. 53% of Americans support banning high capacity ammunition clips and 56% for bullets designed to explode or penetrate bullet-proof vests .

So far as other countries go data is readily available to show that across high-income nations, more guns equals more homicide.

Analysis of the relationship between homicide and gun availability using data from 26 developed countries from the early 1990s. shows that across developed countries, where guns are more available, there are more homicides. These results often hold even when the United States is excluded.

As an example, an Australian law banning semi-automatic and pump-action rifles and shotguns and buying back banned weapons was associated with decreased suicide and homicide rates and with the ABSENCE of ANY mass shootings in the decade following the law compared to 11 mass shootings in the prior decade.

        Fyi.

They drank Flavor Aid, not Kool-Aid, that the Jonestown cult drank in Guyana. Just a point for clarification. :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/NJSurveyor46 Philip Topps

Typical of the liberal "mindset" (another oxymoron). If real events do not suffice to make your point, simply MAKE THEM UP. The morons who listen to the likes of Spier couldn''t or wouldn't be able to discern fact from fiction if it were given intraveniously.
This is the annoying thing, because it is EXACTLY what the likes of Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Tito, et al have been able to get away with throughout the ages.
Remember, NEVER underestimate the power of STUPID PEOPLE in large numbers. Obama wants to create a working model of the 1930s-40s Soviet Union. I've said this since I got laid off THE DAY AFTER HE WAS ELECTED in '08, because my company (Viking Yacht Company) saw the downturn coming, stating, "the new president is not a friend of the marine industry" I retorted, "the new president is not a friend of ANY industry" (Unless you count the welfare state as an industry)
The killing gulags of the Stalinist Soviet Union will be replaced by the "Affordable" (HAH) health care act.

  • Stewart

She is correct. There is mass murder happening every day in the US. It's called about ion
