A petition has been created on the White House's official petitions page, calling for President Obama to send in his resignation and spare the nation from further disgrace.
It was created a few days ago, June 7, and has until July 7 to collect the 100,000 digital signatures that would require the White House address the petition officially. As of this writing, Day 4 of the petition's existence, it has already garnered about 13,500 signatures. At the current average rate, the requisite 100,000 signatures will be reached a few days before the July 7 deadline.
One liberal's response to my posting a link to this on my own site was, "People keep using that site for stupid petitions, which is why the number needed is so ridiculously high now for it to be looked at officially. People who make unnecessary petitions on it are only hurting serious causes that are now hard pressed to be recognized because of the absurd amount of signatures required."
Where he is out of line is in saying that this petition is stupid and unnecessary. President Richard Nixon had the decency to resign from the presidency over much less, less both in the number of scandals and in the degree of his singular scandal's severity. Obama has not apologized for any of the misbehavior committed by his administration, but has instead made excuses, telling us not to worry because it's not as big a deal as we think it is. How comforting.
But the liberal does make a good point as well, and that is that creating silly petitions cheapens the tool of petitioning. This petition is not a silly one, as I just explained, but there are quite a few on the petitions page: "President Obama, if you believe in NSA surveillance, we challenge you to a live, public debate with Edward Snowden" (Snowden is the fellow who exposed the NSA recently, which is why this debate will never happen); "Bar Facebook from removing offensive pages, under violation of our First Amendment rights" (Facebook is a private company and can therefore do what it wants); "Teach public school children the truth: ANTI-RACIST IS A CODE WORD FOR ANTI-WHITE!" (using Caps Lock does not increase the one-in-a-billion chance of this ever happening); and "Have President Obama PUBLICLY apologize to George Zimmerman for infringing on his right to a fair trial" (Zimmerman killed a young man who looks like Obama's fantasy son, which is why this will never happen).
In making this point about the silliness of some petitions' cheapening of the value of others, the liberal inadvertently takes a jab at his fellow lefties who, with reckless abandon, throw around terms like "racist," "sexist," "homophobe," and "war," as in the "War on Women" Republicans supposedly wage in expecting adult women to be adult enough to take care of themselves, a "war" which makes barroom fistfights look like the Holocaust. By overusing these liberal buzzwords, liberals cheapen true racism, sexism, homophobia, and war.
If you’d like Obama to resign, or at least to be forced to address the lower standard over which his presidential predecessor resigned 40 years ago, sign this petition. It does require your name, city of residence, and an email address, but in light of all these scandals, it's reasonable to assume Obama already has all of that information.
