Democrat Wants People in the Country Illegally to Get Obamacare

Representative Luis Gutiérrez has introduced a bill to make illegal immigrants eligible for Obamacare.

The hypocrisy involved in all this is staggering.

According to the Daily Signal, “House Democrats Propose Illegal Immigrants Gain Access to Obamacare.”

The pope’s reminder of the Golden Rule during his visit to Congress inspired a House Democrat to introduce legislation to expand the Affordable Care Act.

Last week Rep. Luis Gutiérrez, D-Ill., introduced new legislation called the Exchange Inclusion for a Healthy America Act of 2015, which would allow illegal immigrants health care coverage under Obamacare.

“Treat your brother and your sister and your neighbor with compassion as you would like to be treated yourself,” Gutiérrez stated on the House floor. “And in the case of health care and access to health insurance, it is not simply out of a sense of moral altruism, although that is a part of it. Rather it is out of the reality that treating our brothers and sisters and neighbors as we want to be treated when it comes to health care and access to care and access to health insurance is in our own self-interest, as well.”

“The goal is to cover everyone in this country, regardless of immigration status, provided they establish state residency and file taxes (which most immigrants already do),” states the congressman’s Facebook page. “We have to make sure it’s accessible to everyone living here.”

The Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, “explicitly prohibits the payment of exchange tax credits and cost sharing subsidies to illegal immigrants,” says Ed Haislmaier, a senior research fellow in health policy studies at The Heritage Foundation.

First of all, how can Gutiérrez propose a law that gives people rights while at the same time denying that they are supposed to be in the country? I realize that he must want some form of amnesty, but I’ve not heard democrats claim that all restrictions on immigration should be removed. So which is it? They propose one law sounding like it is absolutely necessary for Christian charity but leave other laws in place that are inconsistent with it.

Secondly, I completely agree that we should “treat your brother and your sister and your neighbor with compassion as you would like to be treated yourself.” I wish none of us were struggling with the poison fangs of Obamacare sinking into our throats. I am jealous of illegal immigrants because they don’t have to enroll in Obamacare.

But if Obamacare was so great, it still wouldn’t be an act of “compassion.” You are simply enrolling a person in a bureaucratic system that either rips him off or gives him other people’s money. It is not generous to give people other people’s money. The Golden Rule is teaching us to help our neighbors, not assign them to Caesar and the tax collectors.

If you don’t believe me that Obamacare is bad, don’t take my word for it. Hispanics are finding that it gives them a raw deal. They are not enrolling in the program because it rips them off.

I question whether this law is really supposed to help immigrants at all. More likely it is an attempt to bolster Obamacare’s failing numbers.
