Electric Cars, Ethanol Harm the Environment

You have probably known this for a long time, but it is nice to see the Associated Press admit electric cars are not green.

People who own all-electric cars where coal generates the power may think they are helping the environment. But a new study finds their vehicles actually make the air dirtier, worsening global warming.

Ethanol isn’t so green, either.

“It’s kind of hard to beat gasoline” for public and environmental health, said study co-author Julian Marshall, an engineering professor at the University of Minnesota. “A lot of the technologies that we think of as being clean … are not better than gasoline.”

The key is where the source of the electricity all-electric cars. If it comes from coal, the electric cars produce 3.6 times more soot and smog deaths than gas, because of the pollution made in generating the electricity, according to the study that is published Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. They also are significantly worse at heat-trapping carbon dioxide that worsens global warming, it found.

The study examines environmental costs for cars’ entire life cycle, including where power comes from and the environmental effects of building batteries.

I’m amazed this story is being put out in the mainstream press just as the price of gasoline is sinking. It is like the establishment is giving us permission to enjoy low gas prices. The study does claim that using an electric vehicle on an electric grid run on oil or gas is cleaner than a gas-run car. But many states still use mainly coal.

Of course, there are other reasons to prefer a gasoline-driven internal combustion engine. Filling a tank is a lot quicker than recharging a battery.

Hybrids and diesel engines are cleaner than gas, causing fewer air pollution deaths and spewing less heat-trapping gas.

But ethanol isn’t, with 80 percent more air pollution mortality, according to the study.

“If we’re using ethanol for environmental benefits, for air quality and climate change, we’re going down the wrong path,” [University of Minnesota engineering professor, Jason] Hill said.

Indeed we are!

Yet government subsidies, exploiting taxpayers and driving up national debt, have been pushed into these wasteful and polluting schemes. Solyndra, the notorious solar panel maker that took government money and then went bankrupt, is only the tip of the iceberg. The government propagandists constantly justify all this open corruption as some kind of gift to the human race that will bring us into a “sustainable” future. The more honest propaganda skips that lie and simply advertizes to the people getting the loot that they need to thank the government. If you live in a corn-producing region of the country you already know that there are billboards reminding the farmers of how much easier they have it because ethanol creates demand for the crop. They are openly maintaining programs in order to purchase loyalty from key interest groups.

They pretend it is all about “science,” natural resources, and planning. But you don’t even have to look hard to see it is really about everyone attempting to live at the expense of everyone else.
