Gay Wrongs by Executive Order

Barack Obama is doing whatever he can to win the culture war for the Left. Thus:

President Barack Obama plans to sign an executive order banning federal contractors from discriminating against employees on the basis of their sexual orientation, a White House official said today. The move follows years of pressure from gay rights groups for Obama to act on his own while a broader employment non-discrimination measure languishes on Capitol Hill. The Senate passed the legislation last year but the bill stalled in the Republican-led House and there is little sign that lawmakers will take it up in an election year.

There is currently no federal law that explicitly bans workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. While Obama does not have the authority to extend that protection to all Americans, he can take unilateral action that impacts federal contractors, which make up nearly one-quarter of the US workforce.

The fact that so many people in the workforce are Federal contractors is a scandal apart from any other aspect of the story. But I will turn my attention to other problems.

If this was only about hiring homosexuals, it would make very little difference. Homosexuals are hired all the time. Even Christians hire them. If you are running a business in a competitive environment you rarely have the luxury of only hiring married or single and celibate employees. If an employee is shacking up with his/her girlfriend/boyfriend, if he spends a couple of hours after work viewing porn, or if he or she “goes clubbing” on Friday nights and commits fornication with a stranger doesn’t really matter as far as the job is concerned. Whether someone does all this in a homosexual way likewise doesn’t matter.

But, of course, this assumes the homosexual employee looks and acts in a way that does not frighten customers of fellow employees. If an applicant is a man who insists on wearing a dress and using the lady’s room, then you might decide they are going to be more trouble than they are worth. Barack Obama thinks you should lose your Federal contract. He hopes someday that the drag queen will be able to sue you.

Ironically, if the law is ever passed, homosexuals will be empowered by trial lawyers to find excuses to sue. At that point, even amoral employees are going to have to worry that a homosexual employee will mean a litigious expense due to some perceived slight. They will, thanks to Congress, have a financial incentive to not hire homosexuals.

In the meantime, Barack Obama doesn’t care about workplace discrimination against Brendan Eich, the former CEO of Mozilla. Obviously, his executive order is designed to spread inequality.
