Bill Maher, the ultra-left comedian and talk show host, has made a living by tearing apart conservatives. Once in a while, he’ll go after a liberal, but for the most part he’s an anti-Rush Limbaugh.
But even those credentials aren’t socialist enough to get him a warm welcome at UC Berkeley, one of the super-giant planets that orbits the black hole of liberalism.
Odd as it may seem, Maher’s planned graduation speech is being protested for his “racist and bigoted” views on Islam. Translation from liberalspeak into English: “racist and bigoted” in this context means “realistic.”
One of the few places Maher’s plane touches solid ground is on the subject of Islam, about which he has said:
- “What it comes down to is that there is one religion in the world that kills you when you disagree with them. They say, ‘Look, we’re a religion of peace and if you disagree we’ll cut your f***ing head off.’ And nobody calls them on it, or there are very few people who call them on it. You know, it’s like if dad is a violent drunk and beats his kids. You don’t blame the kid because he set dad off. You blame dad because he’s a violent drunk.”
- “If they were beheading people in Vatican City, which is the equivalent of Mecca, don’t you think there’d be a bigger outcry about it? So this is the soft bigotry of low expectations that we have with Muslim people. When they do crazy things and believe crazy things, somehow it’s just not talked about nearly as much.”
- “It’s the only religion that acts like the mafia, that will f***ing kill you if you say the wrong thing, or draw the wrong picture, or write the wrong book.”
- “It’s been going on a thousand years, this problem Islam and the West. We’re dealing with a culture that is in its medieval era. It comes from a hate-filled holy book, the Koran, which is taken very literally by its people.”
Naturally, that sort of talk doesn’t sit well with Berkeley’s Muslims and sympathizers. So far, a petition by the Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian Coalition on Change.org to stop Maher’s graduation speech has garnered nearly 2,000 signatures.
“Bill Maher is a blatant bigot and racist who has no respect for the values UC Berkeley students and administration stand for,” the petition reads. “In a time where climate is a priority for all on campus, we cannot invite an individual who himself perpetuates a dangerous learning environment. Bill Maher’s public statements on various religions and cultures are offensive and his dangerous rhetoric has found its way into our campus communities.”
Maher’s rhetoric about Islam is no more offensive than his rhetoric about Christianity or anything else he talks about. Part of his whole shtick is being offensive, the very reason a lot of people won’t watch his show in the first place.
But being crude and offensive seems to appeal to liberals, which makes the slap from Berkeley students simply amusing. Realizing that the protest comes from Muslim students who want to whine about Maher’s Islam comments but who probably wouldn’t utter a peep about ISIS just makes the whole situation doubly funny.
