Should a Pastor Teach that It is Wrong For Christians to Defend Themselves?

I suppose John Piper will object to my interpretation of his essay, “Should Christians Be Encouraged to Arm Themselves?” If so, he is self-deceived. The point of this long essay is to tell Christians they should not possess firearms and the secondary point is to deny that he is not telling Christians that they should not possess firearms. The reason he touched on the subject, he tells us, is because he didn’t like the words of Jerry Falwell, Jr., telling his students to arm themselves. I Read more […]

Animal Control

What the Bible tells us about animal control illustrates God’s view of human responsibility and justice. We saw last week in Micah 6:8 that as disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to do justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God. One particularly thorny aspect of justice is the question of unintended consequences. When someone intentionally commits a crime whether that is premeditated or not we can see how justice is served, but what about when someone acts without an intention Read more […]

Thanksgiving, Collectivism and Christianity

I know way too many ultraliberal folks. (Probably comes from living in California.) That being the case, Thanksgiving is not only a day for giving thanks, but it is a day of annual inevitability when the conversation at some point will turn and someone will assert that Thanksgiving is the very model of socialism and a demonstration of how collectivism is the moral duty of mankind as demonstrated in the Bible. Said assertion means Thanksgiving is also the day when I annually choke on a piece Read more […]

The Most Important Human Government

As we approach the Thanksgiving to Christmas season I am reminded of that same time of the year in 1992. My Father, Gordon Whitney, was battling brain cancer. It had been two years since diagnosis. There was surgery and treatment that at first seemed successful, but then the cancer returned we were told it was in operable. We knew we had little time left with dad. The last I saw him, he was trying to do whatever he could to leave the hospital and go home. We visited on Thanksgiving and then Read more […]

Capital Punishment by God’s Standard

The law enforcement community has been congratulating itself on the lowing of violent crime statistics. The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports, for example, records the murders in 1994 as 23,326 as contrast with 2013 (the latest report available) as 14,196.[1] That was until Ferguson and then Baltimore where we have seen a significant uptick.  The FBI director “During his speech at the annual convention of the International Association of Chiefs of Police… said the surge in criticism and protests Read more […]

Marriage by God’s Standard

If a group were to conspire together in the goal of destroying a country without firing a shot, how would they pull that off? The most effective way to destroy a land is to collapse it at its foundations, and the most fundamental building block of any civilization is the family. As the family goes, so goes everything else. So the most effective pathway is to declare war against marriage and the family in order to completely destroy a society. The strategy to destroy the American family began Read more […]

John Kasich Twists Scripture to Defend Obamacare

John Kasich goes into full Obamacare zealot mode and abuses the Bible to use it as a public policy guide. Since John Kasich made his comments to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, I have to assume he believes he is appealing to Hispanics when he made his silly, false comments about the Bible and Obamacare. If the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is dominated by insurance executives who think they can get a profit boost from Obamacare, then maybe he was correctly appealing to his hearers. But if he Read more […]

Understanding the Enemy’s Agenda

The survey conducted by Fox News July 13-15 this year asked Christians if they believed that Christians were under attack in America today. 81% of Evangelical Christians say Christianity is under attack in America, and when surveying voters as a whole 51% say Christianity is under attack in these united States. This survey was done just two weeks after the Supreme’s immoral opinion was issued. Now the interesting aspect for me is the element of surprise that this holds for the majority of Christians. We Read more […]

God and Guns

What does the Bible have to say about God and guns? Another tragic shooting took place last week. A 24-year-old Kuwaiti-born, Muhammad Youssef Adbulazeez, opened fire at two military facilities in Chattanooga Thursday, killing four Marines and injuring three others before dying from a gunshot wound. I think it is significant that this occurred on the eve of Eid, the biggest Mohammedan holiday of the year, which is the end of Ramadan. By the way Mohammedans supposedly get extra bonus points Read more […]

Natural Law Won’t Help You, Christian

Trying to use natural law so that you won’t be accused of reasoning from the Bible is a fool’s mission. It has been pretty common for some Christians and Christian traditions to insist that we should reason about matters of public justice and the social order from “natural law.” Supposedly, natural law is a realm of moral principles that are evident to all reasonable people whether or not they are Christians. Can we please let the Supreme Court’s latest offense end that myth? Look, Read more […]

Who Owns the Family?

This week I had a bit of an unnerving experience. Just having new tires put on the car, Neil, Joe and I were driving back from a speech I gave in Northern Baltimore County. It seemed like there was some additional noise from the rear of the car and it seemed at certain speeds to vibrate more than normal. I got to wondering if perhaps they didn’t balance the tires properly or if there was some other mechanical problem. It never entered my thoughts that it could be more serious than that. House Votes Down D.C. Pro-Abortion ‘Discrimination’ Law

Lawmakers in the House got up the nerve to strike down a law that pro-abortion groups want very badly. The law in question is the Reproductive Health Non-Discrimination Amendment Act, and as you can figure from the euphemistic title, it’s about cramming the abortion agenda down Americans’ throats. The Left portrays the law as protecting pro-abortion workers (now there’s a class I never thought of as discriminated against) from discrimination in hiring because of their political views. The Read more […]
