It took a grownup to put an end to the worst of the nonsense taking place in Ferguson, Missouri, for five nights since police shot and killed a black teen.
That grownup happens to be the Democratic governor of Missouri, Jay Nixon, who announced Thursday night that he was taking authority for law enforcement in Ferguson away from the local Barney Fife Brigade and giving it to the Highway Patrol. It’s completely understandable after all the images of tear gas, smoke bombs, flash bang grenades and rubber bullets being used by police in full riot armor against protesters.
You might wonder what took so long, but at least Nixon made the call. On Thursday night, according to various reports, it seemed to have begun the process of de-escalation in the St. Louis suburb.
That’s the thing that’s troublesome about Ferguson. It’s difficult to get an accurate picture from half a continent away, but in watching numerous videos of events and reading written accounts of what was happening, it sounds almost like the police were less interested in restoring peace than they were in doing combat with protesters.
I’m guessing the police felt that they were under seige, a feeling that was surely reinforced when the New Black Panther Party literally stormed Police Chief Tom Jackson’s press conference on Thursday, causing Jackson and other officers to flee. The group’s leader, Hashim Nzinga, then addressed the crowd, mostly complaining about President Obama not helping black people.
“This is a shame that as we speak the president of United States is talking to Russia, he’s talking to China, he’s talking to North Korea, he’s talking to Iraq and the Middle East about treating their people better,” Nzinga said. “But as he look out the window at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, he’s watching the black man, who built the White House, shot down like dogs.”
Despite the profusion of confusion about facts, the anti-Obama rhetoric is somewhat thrilling and not entirely misplaced. Obama has spent all of about 10 minutes showing any interest in events in Ferguson, preferring to party in Martha’s Vineyard. Still, you have to wonder why a clown like Nzinga, who was arrested in 2012 for putting out a bounty for George Zimmerman’s life, is allowed to roam free, much less invade government press conferences.
This is the same Black Panther group the Justice Department let off the hook for voter intimidation some years ago.
Other highlights of the Black Panther presence in Ferguson include Al Sharpton getting called out for being a phony and a race-mongering hack.
Then there was that bit about “journalists” being arrested, something that even got a mention from President Obama. I have to put the word journalists in quotes, however, because of the two people arrested by Ferguson SWAT, only one was a real journalist working for the Washington Post.
(The other is a contributor to the Huffing-and-Puffington Post, one of the illegal aliens of journalism who takes paying jobs from trained professionals and has helped destroy journalism in America. But because HP’s partnership with AOL makes it just about the biggest captive-audience media outlet around, the Obama foot soldier’s tale of woe is making the rounds.)
Washington Post reporter Wesley Lowery said on Twitter that SWAT officers invaded a McDonald’s where he was working, demanded to see identification, then arrested him and the HuffPo’s flying monkey because they weren’t packing up their stuff and leaving fast enough. Lowery said officers slammed his head into a soda machine when he was confused about which direction they were telling him to go.
I think Ferguson poses a dilemma for the Left’s narrative about this country. For years, they’ve tried to persuade Americans that conservatives are a danger to the nation. The Department of Homeland Security has issued multiple reports saying as much. In fact, a DHS report recently was leaked that predicts an increase over several years in “anti-government violence” by conservatives inspired by the Bundy Ranch standoff.
In addition, police forces across the country have been upgrading their arms and armor since Obama came into office, with the DHS distributing military equipment, including vehicles.
There in Ferguson, all the Left’s fears are coming true as masses of people protest a government agency and destroy a community in the process. But it’s liberals doing it, not conservatives. Voter statistics show that most black voters chose Obama and usually vote Democrat. If only we could take an instant poll of the demonstrators and looters in Ferguson it would probably show most of them to be Obama fans.
Perhaps that’s why the police seemed reluctant to stop the violence. Images of tear gas and smoke bombs are bad enough; images of cops beating on demonstrators would just be a whole new can of worms to deal with. And there are a lot of jerks with cameras like the HuffPo flying monkey just waiting to post such images.
In announcing the change of security, Nixon said, “What’s gone on here over the last few days is not what Missouri’s about, it’s not what Ferguson’s about. … (It’s) a Missouri community, but lately it’s looked a little bit more like a war zone, and that’s unacceptable.”
