Ten days ago, we reported that Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) would be resigning his senate seat at the first of the year to take on the leadership of the Heritage Foundation. I truly hated to see DeMint leave the US Senate as he was the most conservative member of the Senate and served as a great balancing rod for the GOP.
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley (R) then had the task of appointing a replacement for DeMint. It didn’t take her long to form a short list that many believe contained the names of Rep. Trey Gowdy, former state Attorney General Henry McMaster, former SC first lady Jenny Sanford, Rep. Tim Scott and state health agency director Catherine Templeton. Although DeMint never publicly stated who he favored as his replacement, those who were close to him believed he favored Rep. Tim Scott and indeed, Scott was appointed to fill DeMint’s seat by Gov. Haley yesterday. Even though DeMint’s term expires in 2016, Scott will have to run for re-election in 2014.
Tim Scott will be the first black US Senator from South Carolina, but Haley states that his minority status had nothing to do with his selection. In making her announcement, Haley said:
“Congressman Scott earned this seat, it’s very important to me as a minority female to make that clear.”
“He earned this seat for the person that he is. He earned this seat for the results he has shown. He earned this seat for what I know he’s going to do in making South Carolina and making our country proud.”
“I have no doubt that he will fly through 2014. I am strongly convinced that I and the entire state understands that this is the right U.S. senator for our state and for our country.”
Scott is a fast rising star in the South Carolina GOP. He is an evangelical Christian who owned his own insurance agency where he also worked as a financial advisor In 2008, he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives and then elected to the US House of Representatives in 2010. While serving in Congress, Scott made it known that he supports:
- Right-to-Work laws
- Cutting federal spending and taxes
- Repeal of Obamacare
- Opposes earmarks
- Opposes restrictions on offshore oil drilling
- Supports pro-life
- Opposes embryonic stem cell research, but does favor umbilical cord and adult stem cell research
- Opposes assisted suicide
- Supports Arizona immigration law SB 70
- Supports tougher penalties for business caught hiring illegal aliens.
- Supports English only laws
- Supports programs to help small businesses.
From the sound of his record, Scott may be a good replacement for DeMint. I just hope and pray that he doesn’t get corrupted by Washington politics.
