For How Long will Towns Subsidize Candidates?

One local police force has refused to accept that it has the duty to subsidize candidates when they come and campaign.

We already know that Hillary Clinton demands rock-star-level treatment when she is hired as a speaker. (Sadly, her behavior is imitated by at least one Republican).

However, it is one thing to demand luxuries from people who voluntarily agree to pay you to speak at their event. It is quite another to visit a location in order to campaign for an office that you wish to hold and charge the people in that location a lot of money for your presence when they did not invite you.

Such a situation seems more like old-world royalty where a visiting noble could demand on-the-spot deference and privileges from hapless locals.

In one case, the locals don’t think they should be forced to subsidize candidates. According to the New York Times website, “Florida Town Balks at Providing Security for Hillary Clinton.”

The South Florida town where Hillary Clinton is holding a campaign event Friday has refused to participate in her security detail, causing a dust-up among law enforcement agencies.

Mrs. Clinton will attend what is being billed as a “grass-roots” rally Friday afternoon at Broward College in Davie, a town of 90,000 people about 25 miles north of Miami. The college is accustomed to dignitary visits: the school hosted last year’s debate for governor and has provided security for Michelle Obama, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and his wife, Jill, and even the Dalai Lama.

But this time, when crowd expectations began to swell, the Davie Police Department balked at spending several extra thousand dollars on police overtime, according to several people familiar with the preparations.

Why is this even a debate? Candidates raise funds for campaigns. They should provide their own security.

Naturally, the Secret Service took great personal offense and promised “to name names about the episode if ever called before Congress.” Why should congress have anything to say about it? They don’t have authority over the budget of Davie, Florida, or any other town in any one of the fifty states.

The article also raises the possibility of political motivations. They give some reasons but I don’t see how it makes sense to claim a town that has hosted Joe Biden and Michelle Obama is suddenly opposed to Hillary Clinton.

Neither Hillary Clinton nor any other candidate in either party should have the power to simply confiscate a portion of any town’s police budget simply because they want to get votes.
