Kermit Gosnell’s attorney Jack McMahon said his client is being targeted only because he’s black. He claimed the Philadelphia district attorney’s office “tried to manipulate everybody” and called their attempt to prosecute Gosnell an “elitist, racist prosecution.” He continued:
“Never have I seen the presumption of innocence so trampled on, stomped on…Dr. Gosnell is not the only one doing abortions in Philadelphia, but he was an African American singled out for prosecution. We know why he was targeted. If you can’t see that reality, you’re living in some sort of la-la land.”
The saying is you’re innocent until proven guilty. Unfortunately, that principle is fading away, but in this case, Dr. Gosnell was presumed innocent for many years. In fact, people in positions of authority knew about the ghastly conditions of his abortion clinic, knew about the infanticide, but covered it up.
So he experienced the benefit of “innocence.” Now we have more than enough evidence and plenty of eyewitnesses, all of which cast guilt on Dr. Gosnell as a murderer. And not just a murderer in the eyes of pro-lifers who view the act of abortion as murder, but also the eyes of the law that considers infanticide to be murder. He can no longer be presumed innocent.
It doesn’t matter that he’s black. And yes, I’m sure there are plenty of other abortion doctors in Philadelphia. Hopefully, they too will be exposed. And if any of them turn out to be white, that should make no difference in their prosecutions. Gosnell is being prosecuted not because he’s black, but because he’s a murderer.
McMahon went on to explain that Dr. Gosnell was a public servant. He provided services even to 13 and 14-year-old “desperate, young girls.” His “patients” would pay what they could and often give him paper IOU’s. So, he doesn’t deserve the sort of treatment he’s getting now:
“He knew what he was doing; he was giving this community health care they might not have otherwise had. He never turned away a desperate, troubled young lady because they didn’t have enough money. And who comes to help them? Dr. Gosnell. He gave them a solution to their problem. They went in for a service, and Dr. Gosnell got it done.”
Eugenicists throw the term “solution” around when they’re talking about ways to eliminate a certain group of people. Hitler wanted a “solution” to the Jew problem. And Margaret Sanger wanted a “solution” to the black problem. This underscores the irony of black abortionists like Gosnell. As an abortionist, he only helped to achieve Sanger’s “solution” to the black problem.
