Jeb Bush identified himself as Hispanic on a voter registration form; perhaps showing he should be diagnosed as a transethnic.
Obviously, as the recognition of a basic human right, Jeb Bush should not have to spend any of his personal fortune on the necessary “corrective” surgery. But he should get taxpayer dollars in order to get some changes to his appearance to match his identification as a Latino, right? After all, if men can demand taxpayer money to be women because that’s how they identify themselves, then why not someone who is transethnic? That makes as much sense as transgender, doesn’t it?
Yes, I know this was only some kind of strange mistake, but it does seem weirdly appropriate. The New York Times First Draft blog reports, “Jeb Bush Listed Himself as ‘Hispanic’ on Voter Form.”
There is little doubt that Jeb Bush possesses strong credentials for appealing to Hispanic voters.
He speaks fluent Spanish. His wife, Columba Bush, was born in Mexico. For two years in his 20s, he lived in Venezuela, immersing himself in the country’s culture.
Mr. Bush, a former Florida governor and likely presidential candidate, was born in Texas and hails from one of America’s most prominent political dynasties. But on at least one occasion, it appears he got carried away with his appeal to Spanish-speaking voters and claimed he actually was Hispanic.
In a 2009 voter-registration application, obtained from the Miami-Dade County Elections Department, Mr. Bush marked Hispanic in the field labeled “race/ethnicity.”
A Bush spokeswoman could offer no explanation for the characterization. However, Mr. Bush took to Twitter late on Monday morning to call the situation a mistake.
I’m sure it was a mistake. Oddly, it has been made before. Hispanic network Univision referred to Bush as a “Hispanic candidate” earlier this year.
Everyone is laughing about this, but how do we all “just know” that a man claiming to be a different ethnicity is a mistake or a joke or a fraud, but when someone claims to be the other gender we are told that is a matter of grave human rights and that we must all accommodate ourselves to making this person comfortable and joining with them in his/her (!) delusion?
