Is Obama Planning to go Back to Iraq?

President Obama made all sorts of antiwar promises about war and national security and civil liberties which he has never kept. In fact, on issues ranging from drone terrorism to whistleblower persecutions to locking people up forever without trial, Obama has been worse than Bush.

But Obama has had one supposed triumph that he has trumpeted loudly: he withdrew from Iraq.

But, in the first place, we still have over a couple of hundred “security forces” there, “training” the Iraqi security forces. In other words we are training their secret police who work for the rising Iraqi dictator.  Human Rights Watch found that Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has secret prisons in Iraq where people are tortured. Those are the kind of forces we are helping.

Congress recently refused to re-authorize these trainers. However, the Pentagon is not withdrawing the troops. According to Foreign Policy’s The Cable,

“No personnel will return immediately to the United States on Oct. 1, 2012 while DoD is reviewing the effect of not being authorized under the Continuing Resolution to continue the training of Iraqi Security Forces (ISF)  following expiration of the Iraqi Security Forces Fund (ISFF) authority on Sept. 30, 2012,” Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Wesley Miller said in his response. “The Department of Defense is reviewing the availability of other authorities that may authorize OSC-I to conduct training activities in Iraq.”

But the truth gets even worse. According to a recent New York Times report, we may soon be sending more soldiers into Iraq. Under the headline, “Syrian War’s Spillover Threatens a Fragile Iraq,” readers are told

Iraq and the United States are negotiating an agreement that could result in the return of small units of American soldiers to Iraq on training missions. At the request of the Iraqi government, according to General Caslen, a unit of Army Special Operations soldiers was recently deployed to Iraq to advise on counterterrorism and help with intelligence.

This is too perfect. The reason why there is “spillover” from Syria is because the US and its allies are supporting and promoting uprisings of Islamic radicals and jihadists. So we have the perfect sequence: 1. Obama removes most of the troops and claims the fulfillment of a campaign promise; 2. The Obama Administration supports the destabilization of Syria and the surrounding nations. 3. The chaos makes Iraq ask for American troops back. 4. Obama sends the troops back after he is re-elected.

There is no reason for us to be in Iraq. Obama needs keep the troops out of there. Better yet, he needs to lose his authority over the troops by losing his job.
