This week the United States Supreme Court is hearing arguments concerning same-sex marriage in Proposition 8, California’s law that bans it. There already are rumors flying around that the court will strike down Proposition 8 and legalize same-sex marriage. Some of the rumors have been prompted by the reports that Chief Justice John Roberts’ cousin is reported to be a lesbian.
If in fact the Supreme Court strikes down Proposition 8 and legalizes same-sex marriage, it could be the same as pronouncing a death sentence on the America that many of us knew and loved.
Historically whenever God has blessed the nation who worshiped Him and followed his statutes, that nation flourished and prospered as America has for the past two centuries. However, when those same nations have turned their backs on God, no longer worshiping Him or following His statutes, He has pulled his blessings from that nation and ended up bringing them to ruin.
Many Christians have wondered how long America could last once we legalized the murdering of unborn children. They’ve also asked how long could America last once they removed God, the Bible, and Jesus Christ from our schools, government and public life. Now we have to start asking the question how long can America last when we overtly turn from God’s statutes and embrace such sinful lifestyles as homosexuality.
The more I read and see what has happened in our nation over the past four years, I can’t help but wonder if we are experiencing the beginning of God’s wrath that is about to pour down on our land. God gives nations the rulers that they deserve, and to be honest we deserve the rulers that we have.
In the case of homosexuality and same-sex marriage, I believe the decision of the Supreme Court will determine the immediate course of America’s future and God’s judgment. I often refer to Romans 1:18-31, where three times we are told that God turns us over to our sinful lusts and desires as part of the judgment against us. The section of Scripture specifically refers to homosexuality and the fact that once the people approve of such things they are placed as a nation under the judgment of the Almighty Creator God.
When God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, He did it because of the rampant homosexuality that took place in those cities. Mighty Rome was the power of its time. They conquered a large part of the known world and in their power and splendor came wealth and prosperity. With wealth and prosperity came debauchery and hedonism. No one at the time thought that Rome would fall, but fall it did after it openly embraced the sexual perverseness that we are seeing in America today.
They say history has a tendency to repeat itself but people don’t learn the lessons from the mistakes of others. Is America about to make the same mistakes as Rome, Sodom and Gomorrah? That’s the decision resting in the hands of the United States Supreme Court. Will America repent and survive or will the court put the final nail in the nation’s coffin?
