What do some Muslims and Liberals have in common? No taste for delicious irony, perhaps.
As we follow the meltdown over Ben Carson’s comment about voting for a Muslim candidate for President, both Muslims and Liberals give us some amazing statements. This headline, for example, was posted without any hint that the irony was noticed: “Muslims Demand That Ben Carson Quit the Race.” Looking at the URL and how the story showed up in my Facebook feed, it looks like the original headline was stronger: “Outraged Muslims: Ben Carson Must Quit the Presidential Race Now.”
Yeah. Ben Carson must be punished for saying Islam is incompatible with democracy. Forcing him to quit running for office for making such a statement will demonstrate how wrong he is!
I assume that some Muslims are wincing in embarrassment over this. Obviously, the proper response in a democratic Republic, when a candidate holds a view you disagree with, is to vote for someone else. To any thinking person, Muslims claiming that Carson must drop from the race because of his forbidden opinion provides support for his opinion!
According to NBC News,
The Council on American-Islamic Relations on Sunday called for Carson to withdraw from the race.
“Mr. Carson clearly does not understand or care about the Constitution, which states that ‘no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office,'” the group’s national executive director, Nihad Awad, said in a statement.
But Carson said nothing about the civil right of a Muslim American citizen to run for President or to hold office if elected President. That is all a diversion. Even if he wanted to amend the Constitution, as long as he enforced it while President, his personal opinion does not negate his right to run for office any more than it would negate a Muslim’s right to do so.
I’m sorry to spell out the obvious, but the blaring headlines tell me that many people don’t understand basic logic or the Constitution.
But the Muslims at CAIR sound like sober geniuses when compared to Bernie Sanders response, which NBC news goes on to report to us. When I first wrote about the controversy over Ben Carson I addressed why we see Muslims and Liberals being outraged together. It isn’t hard to understand the Muslims, but what about the Liberals? Perhaps you thought I was exaggerating when I wrote,
The real problem here is that Liberals don’t believe in real Muslims. They believe in fellow Liberals who happen to “identify as Muslim” due to some bit of cultural heritage that they use to flavor their Liberal lives.
Here is what Bernie Sanders said (with my emphasis). He displays exactly the mindset I described:
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said in a statement Sunday that “I am very disappointed that Dr. Carson would suggest that a Muslim should not become president of the United States.”
“It took us too long to overcome the prejudice against electing a Catholic or an African-American president,” he said in a statement. “People should be elected to office based on their ideas, not their religion or the color of their skin.”
There you have it. Religion doesn’t have anything to do with ideas. It is just a few cultural artifacts that you inherit and it is no more significant than your skin pigmentation.
This is why the First Amendment is becoming a dead letter. The government now thinks it can force you to recognize same-sex “marriage” as real, and they aren’t violating your “religion” because religion and ideas are totally separate.
We all get perfect freedom as long as we become Liberals.
