Oh, wow; this news about the moderate Syrian rebels is such a massive surprise. Who would have ever guessed? I mean, the United States has a glowing record in picking the right jihadists to support, train, and equip (See: Osama Bin Laden—seems that worked out smashingly for the people in the Twin Towers and the Pentagon!).
The “moderate” Islamists our President and Congress just voted to arm in order to fight ISIS have now signed a non-aggression pact with ISIS!
From the Global Post, “Syria rebels, IS in ‘non-aggression’ pact near Damascus.”
Syrian rebels and jihadists from the Islamic State have agreed a non-aggression pact for the first time in a suburb of the capital Damascus, a monitoring group said on Friday.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the ceasefire deal was agreed between IS and moderate and Islamist rebels in Hajar al-Aswad, south of the capital.
Under the deal, “the two parties will respect a truce until a final solution is found and they promise not to attack each other because they consider the principal enemy to be the Nussayri regime.”
Nussayri is a pejorative term for the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam to which President Bashar al-Assad belongs.
Syria’s armed opposition initially welcomed jihadists including Islamic State members in their fight against Assad.
But the group’s harsh interpretation of Islam and quest for domination of captured territory sparked a backlash against it that began in January.
Yes, Virginia, sometimes doing something is exponentially worse than doing nothing. When there’s no good choice (see: November ballot next to “R” and “D”, in many races) one would demonstrate great wisdom by looking for a different option.
Congress, I know it will tick off the Defense contractor lobbyists who were salivating at another chance to make lots of cash from this deal, but stopping this plan before we arm the next Bin Laden seems like the intelligent course of action.
