Megan McArdle on Why the Secular Left was Fine Bullying Hobby Lobby

I don’t always agree with or like what Megan McArdle has to say, but this time she hit it out of the park. In reviewing the hysteria over the Supreme Court case in favor of Hobby Lobby’s freedom to not buy something they don’t want to buy, McArdle writes on why the Left likes coercion.  I think that institutions Hobby Lobby and Little Sisters of the Poor are obviously correct — they are being forced by the government to buy something that they don’t want to buy. We can argue about whether Read more […]

Hobby Lobby and the No Contraceptives Lie

From Deroy Murdock on National Review’s The Corner: “Hobby Lobby Actually Lavishes Contraception Coverage on Its Employees.” Imagine that a woman starts work at Hobby Lobby tomorrow morning — July 1. She joins Hobby Lobby’s health care plan. It includes access, copay-free, to the following categories of FDA-approved birth-control: Male condoms Female condoms Diaphragms with spermicide Sponges with spermicide Cervical caps with spermicide Spermicide alone Birth-control Read more […]

The Stupidity of the World Lining Up Against Hobby Lobby

We Live in a Mindless, Authoritarian Age – Exhibit #236,904. Consider the argument… um… statement made on these signs. Who is the one advocating that bosses must be forced—at the point of a government gun—to pay for what goes on in these ladies’ bedrooms? Oh, yeah, it’s the Floozy Flukettes in this very picture! I agree with the signs: Get bosses out of the bedroom. and politicians out of the bedroom, and Supreme Court justices out of the bedroom! Stop government from coercing Read more […]

Good News: Supreme Court Decided in our Favor, 5-4; Bad News: We’re Still Hostages to Nine People

Two pieces of good news from the Supreme Court came out today, thought they made it by a small majority—they were not the 9-0 decisions we have seen recently. First of all, the Hobby Lobby case was decided in Hobby Lobby’s favor. The government cannot force Hobby Lobby to fund “contraceptives” and, really, abortifacients and abortions. I am happy to report that my cynicism about this case has been disproven! But this victory, as important as it was, and as grateful as we should be Read more […]

Obamacare Supports Abortion by Hiding It

Most of the attention for abortion and the Affordable Care Act has come from the Hobby Lobby case and the regime’s tortuous definition of “rights” associated with it. But, according to a column by Alan Sears, we need to be paying more attention to other aspects of our new insurance because it is designed to trick pro-life people into paying for abortion. According to Sears, [I]n the two years since the bill’s passage the American people have not only found out what’s in it, they’ve Read more […]

SCOTUS Signals That It Doesn’t Care About Religious Liberty

I’ve expressed some pretty extreme skepticism that the Supreme Court has any chance of vindicating the freedom of conscience of the owners of Hobby Lobby. I was and still am hoping that I my feeling is wrong. But yesterday we received a signal from the Court and it is not a good one. From the Washington Post: The Supreme Court declined on Monday to consider whether a New Mexico photographer had a right to refuse service to a same-sex couple who wanted her to record their commitment ceremony. Without Read more […]

Is It Wishful Thinking That Anything “Hangs In The Balance” With the Supreme Court and Hobby Lobby? just reported on some of the transcript of the ongoing arguments before the Supreme Court: Elena Kagan said there is “another choice nobody talks about, which is paying the tax, which is a lot less than a penalty and a lot less than — than the cost of health insurance at all?” “Those employers could choose not to give health insurance and pay not that high a penalty – not that high a tax,” Sotomayor added. Attorney Paul Clement told the Court the companies would face $500 Read more […]

Leftists Smear Corporations to Attack the First Amendment

As the Hobby Lobby case continues, we find Leftists see an opportunity to attack both the First Amendment and corporations. Their response is similar to what you get when you offer a feline cat nip. Thus, from the Daily Beast: After all, corporations have been busily dodging religious values and moral culpability in driving down the wages of workers, fraudulently selling homes and then robo-signing foreclosures, and generally bankrupting the middle class while corporate profits have skyrocketed. The Hobby Lobby Case Is About The Fundamental Premise of The United States

From National Religious Broadcasters: Rhetoric is escalating in Washington as the March 25 date draws near for Hobby Lobby to plead its First Amendment case at the U.S. Supreme Court against the Obama Administration’s mandate that all new health plans cover contraception, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs. As a private business, Hobby Lobby does not fall under the narrow religious exemption of the mandate, so it would be required to include such coverage when its health plan renews or Read more […]

Liberals: If We Can’t Make Hobby Lobby Support Birth Control, How Can We Force Photographers To Attend Same Sex Weddings?

Just so you know how freedom has become meaningless to the cultural left, they are in a twist that if Hobby Lobby wins the right to not cover “birth control” on religious grounds, then it might not be possible for homosexual couples to force photographers to affirm same sex “marriage.” From the Huffington Post: Arizona’s attempt to let businesses refuse to serve LGBT people on religious grounds sparked significantly more bipartisan outrage than Republicans’ similar efforts to allow companies Read more […]
