A group of scientists are petitioning Barack Obama to criminalize climate change dissent by prosecuting the dissenters under RICO law.
Since most scientists in the United States and the Western countries generally are a pack of welfare dependents, this request amounts to the government asking itself to expand its power. “Science” is now a government-industry that has massively expanded since WWII through the state university system as well as through funding for “research.”
So these creatures of the state want the state to grow and destroy their enemies.
The Daily Caller reports, “Scientists Ask Obama to Prosecute Global Warming Skeptics.”
The science on global warming is settled, so settled that 20 climate scientists are asking President Barack Obama to prosecute people who disagree with them on the science behind man-made global warming.
Scientists from several universities and research centers even asked Obama to use the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) to prosecute groups that “have knowingly deceived the American people about the risks of climate change, as a means to forestall America’s response to climate change.”
RICO was a law designed to take down organized crime syndicates, but scientists now want it to be used against scientists, activists and organizations that voice their disagreement with the so-called “consensus” on global warming. The scientists repeated claims made by environmentalists that groups, especially those with ties to fossil fuels, have engaged in a misinformation campaign to confuse the public on global warming.
This shouldn’t surprise us at all. The EPA has been fighting to keep secret the alleged scientific basis of its draconian and bankruptcy-causing regulations (see also here). The government wants to be able to invoke “science” for its rules and be able to punish all contradiction. In a time when another religion besides environmentalism dominated the culture, there was a similar controversy over who was permitted to read and interpret the Bible.
But these riled up academics aren’t the first to suggest using RICO to go after global warming skeptics. The idea was first put forward by Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, who argued using RICO was effective at taking down the tobacco industry.
“In 1999, the Justice Department filed a civil RICO lawsuit against the major tobacco companies… alleging that the companies ‘engaged in and executed — and continue to engage in and execute — a massive 50-year scheme to defraud the public, including consumers of cigarettes, in violation of RICO,’” Whitehouse wrote in the Washington Post in May.
Of course, asking the federal government to prosecute isn’t really about a hearing before an impartial judge. Even if the judge was sane, the federal government has practically unlimited resources to prosecute the case. This helped them defeat Big Tobacco despite the companies’ massive resources.
The climate change skeptics do not have anything close to that kind of financial power. And the rhetoric about being supported by Big Oil is a massive exaggeration. Big Oil is not a champion of climate change skepticism. Environmentalism is too useful to them in discouraging competition and leaving them with higher profits. The Federal government has a good chance of overwhelming the global warming skeptics and ruining their lives simply with court expenses.
But we need to keep fighting.
While the government is a powerful enemy, we shouldn’t give up yet. Canada and Australia are both resisting the devastating plans to “fight global warming.” Facts are on our side.
Remember that getting too discouraged by our government is a form of power worship. As George Orwell explained, “Power-worship blurs political judgment because it leads, almost unavoidably, to the belief that present trends will continue. Whoever is winning at the moment will always seem to be invincible.”
The reason the government might try to use RICO is precisely because they are losing ground. The reason why propagandists are begging for government help is precisely because they are feeling threatened.
Global Warming alarmists are not invincible; they are just winning for a brief moment.
