Alyssa Milano pumped her breast milk on the plane, but was still forced to dump it by airport security heroes.
If you wondered if other countries have the same unionized, Keystone-Cop-level, airport security that we suffer under, here is a piece of evidence that looks rather negative for international liberty. Or international common sense.
Alyssa Milano has a baby that she is breastfeeding. So, when she is apart from her child, she pumps so that there is breast milk available to the baby for other times when she is not with her.
As you probably know, the TSA has decided that liquids are too risky to be permitted on board an airplane because they might be explosives. So it is pretty obvious that Milano could not have brought fake milk liquid explosive all the way across the Atlantic to try to blow up someone at Heathrow Airport.
Thus, when she showed up at Heathrow Airport with ten ounces of white liquid, there was every reason to believe that this liquid was produced by her during the long flight. If that’s really breast milk, then where is your baby, she was asked.
Duh: If she had brought the baby with her, she would have nursed her.
Then you must dump it, says the government that loves us and only wants to care for us in their superior wisdom and knowledge.
Airport spokespersons later told Milano that the rule was that liquids must be in containers of 100 milliliters or less. But, at the time of the incident, Milano was not told of this rule, not given an opportunity to distribute the liquid into smaller containers, or allowed to keep 100 milliliters of it. They ordered her to dump it all.

The good news is that Alyssa Milano did not simply roll over and play dead like many do when victimized by arbitrary and stupid police power. She pushed back via Twitter and forced the powers that be to explain themselves (in other words, show their stupidity).
As ABC News reports, one of her tweets was:
Every ounce of milk I’m able to produce for my child is nothing short of a miracle and to watch that milk be thrown away without any regard for my baby, was heartbreaking.
She also gave a statement to ABC News,
Milano said in the statement provided by her rep that she didn’t blame security at the airport, since employees were “following orders to keep us all safe.” She added that she hoped the policy received a “thoughtful reconsideration.”
“I’m glad this has started a dialogue,” she said. “My only hope is to make things easier for moms, breastfeeding and formula feeding moms, everywhere.”
I suppose I could be upset that Milano ended up being so nice at the end of it. But it is not surprising. A person whose livelihood depends on widespread popularity can’t really afford to cause too much of a ruckus, outside a few pet Liberal causes. It is much safer to campaign for vegetarianism than for the abolition of the TSA.
But those employees aren’t trying to keep anyone safe; they are acting on the same motives that led Milano to give up her breast milk: fear of negative consequences. Airport employees don’t want to be fired. If any of them was permitted to use independent judgment about keeping people safe, they would have known that Alyssa Milano is not an undercover terrorist.
So the question is: How did we, whether in the UK or in the USA, become ruled by a few who can control us so completely? Is there any point at which the populace would refuse to go along to get along?
I’m afraid to discover the answer to that question.
I DO wish that Milano’s hope will come true: that the powers that be will reconsider what they are doing to us. I also wish all of us, from great to small, would reconsider the security we expect the state to deliver to us.
